While the current flag has been used in Japan since 701, it was in 1870, that it gained its current prominence when the government of the day adopted it as the national flag. The large red circle represents the sun and its name is Nishokki which means 'sun mark flag'. It is often known by its more colloquial name, hinomaru, which means circle of the sun.
